How did seven dials get its name?

At one of London's most sought-after addresses, you'll find the Seven Dials monument. Designed to show the whole of London revolving around this very point (just like the Sun and Earth). But how did it get its name? If you stand at the base of the monument and count, you'd more than likely see six dials, BUT, the decorative pillar in the centre stands as a working sundial (making it the seventh dial!).
